Don't Skip Services

Don't Skip Services

In last week's post I discussed the benefits of checking your tyres regularly. I suggested that if you don't feel competent to inspect your tyres that you should seek help from a qualified person.

In this post, I'm taking that theme a little further for those people who never check their own vehicle in any way. There are plenty of drivers who are happy to start-the-car and drive. They have no interest, special knowledge, or perhaps even the opportunity to conduct basic vehicle checks.

For those who are not inclined, for whatever reason, to check under the bonnet etc, it is even more important to maintain the service schedule as set out in the owner's manual. Many vehicles these days even prompt the driver with service intervals. So, that can help.

There are many items that are either non-user-serviceable, may have been damaged in ordinary use (i.e. tyres and particularly EV batteries), or the subject of factory recall (like BMW airbags recently).

If you're not going to maintain your vehicle personally, it's a good idea to let your dealer do it for you. But you need to be a little more self-disciplined in this case. Stick to the service schedule and dashboard prompts.

It's true that taking your car to be serviced by the dealership can be a little bit more expensive than local garages offering a 'logbook' service. However, it's better to go to the dealer who has expert knowledge of your vehicle and any preventative measures that only the dealer may have unique knowledge of.

My dear colleagues in road safety, please take 'more than average' care during this awful COVID pandemic. Try applying Low Risk behaviours in other areas of you life. If you find yourself taking risks, ask your self, "How was I thinking at the time?". Was I "externalising", or was I thinking, "It won't happen to me"? We look forward to seeing you on the other side of this. Thanks for your continued support. Jeremy
