This January we welcome a new client to DTA family. The original course enquiry regarded 4WD training for their FIFO staff who collect 4WD hire cars from airports in remote locations. The legitimate concern, and legal requirement (in Australia), is that employers must provide adequate training and supervision to employees. In this case, the drivers are not expected to operate 4WD vehicles off-road. The 4WDs will be used as transport, mainly on sealed roads, but with the ability to operate on un-sealed surfaces (gravel roads) if they present. However, as most serious 4WD crashes, including 4WD rollover, happen when travelling to-and-from remote work site, we suggest not arranging a Low Risk Driving Course in a Four Wheel Drive? Around 32% of Loss Of Control crashes occur when traveling either in a straight line or cornering. The three main causal factors of 4WD rollover are fatigue speed, speed and swerving. To prevent 4WD rollover in remote locations, it is useful to develop a robust Journey Management Plan that specifically targets driver fatigue, speed, and avoiding swerving. Driver Training Australia is scheduling a Low Risk Driving Instructor - Master Class for 2025 at a date to be confirmed.
The two-day program will enable experienced instructors to design, deliver and assess their own Low Risk Driving Course based on the NSW Roads & Traffic Authority (also known as NSW Roads and Maritime Services) "Framework for Driver Education - An essential guide for the production of driver education programs and assessment systems", third edition ( hereafter The Framework). The program will enable the successful participant to articulate to differences between ordinary driver training programs and Low Risk Driving as defined by The Framework. In addition, participants will be introduced to a set of Adult Learning Principles. With this knowledge, participants will more deeply understand why traditional driver training attempts have generally failed to deliver the expected outcomes, i.e., safer drivers. Most importantly, the acquired knowledge and skills can be used to design, deliver and assess driver training and/or other road safety learning experiences. Following detailed information sessions, participants will work individually and/or in small groups to design and present to peers a Model Learning Experience(s) for discussion and critique. The keynote presenter will be Jeremy Williams, an acknowledged contributor to The Framework with more than 40 years experience in the field. Jeremy will be supported by a team of experienced Low Risk Driving Instructors. If you would like to know more, please email Jeremy at [email protected] with an expression of interest. |
AuthorMy dear colleagues in road safety, please take 'more than average' care during this awful COVID pandemic. Try applying Low Risk behaviours in other areas of you life. If you find yourself taking risks, ask your self, "How was I thinking at the time?". Was I "externalising", or was I thinking, "It won't happen to me"? We look forward to seeing you on the other side of this. Thanks for your continued support. Jeremy Archives
